Haven at Home: Nutritional Yeast Salad Dressing Recipe

If you’ve been to The Haven, chances are you’re familiar with our salad bar – and our famous nutritional yeast dressing. You may have asked for the recipe during your last visit or maybe you’ve been wishing you had. Lucky for you, we’re starting a new series – Haven at Home – to bring some of your favourite recipes, practices, and more, right to your door. If you’re looking for more recipes from meals enjoyed in the lodge, please let us know in the comments below! 

A Shared History: The Haven and The Famous Dressing 

In 1975, Haven founders, Ben and Jock, closed their medical practices and moved to Cortes Island where they began focusing full time on group process work. There, at Cold Mountain Institute, they ran a 3-month “Resident Fellow Program”, the precursor to what is now called the Living Alive (Phase) series, split into 3 1-month segments. They also began facilitating their 5-day Come Alive programs at Cold Mountain, surrounded by other luminaries in the Human Potential Movement like Joseph Campbell, Carl Whitaker, Virginia Satir, Maria Gomori, Paul Reps, Alan Watts, and many others. 

When Cold Mountain’s founder, Richard Weaver, passed away, the Institute split into 3 factions, one of them now being our sister centre, Hollyhock. Through all of the change, one of the things that remained is the yeast dressing. When Ben & Jock opened The Haven on Gabriola Island, not only did they bring their now renowned Come Alive program with them – they also brought this fan-favourite recipe. The nutritional yeast dressing continues to be a mainstay for participants and guests at both gulf island centres, enjoying it on greens, rice bowls, and more!

The Recipe: Nutritional Yeast Dressing 

In a blender, combine:  

  • 2 cloves of garlic  

  • ½ cup of soy sauce or gluten-free Tamari 

  • ¼ cup apple cider vinegar 

  • 1 cup flake yeast

With the blender on low, slowly add: 

  • 3 cups oil (canola, sunflower, olive, or safflower work well) 

  • ¼ cup cold water
