Top 8 Podcast Picks from our Haven Community

If you find yourself with unexpected time on your hands, you’re not alone. In a recent article, long-time Haven Faculty member, Wayne Dodge shared some suggestions of how you might embrace this uncertain time – or at least respond to it in a choice-full way. One action we can take is to listen – to ourselves and others and to our planet. Another is to continue to expand, learn and grow in new ways. 

Back in the Fall, we surveyed our community on Facebook to find out which podcasts they tune into most. Here are the favourites. Whether you’re an avid listener or new to the podcast world, we think you’ll enjoy this selection. Hidden Brain NPR Podcast Haven PickThe Hidden Brain from NPR  

Prefer something a bit more academic and science-y? Then this next pick is for you. The Hidden Brain podcast put on by the National Public Radio based in Washington D.C, is all about how the human brain drives us in strange and interesting ways. Hosted by Shankar Vedantam, an American journalist who focuses on human behavior and the social sciences, this podcast covers a wide variety of topics such as, “How Death Drives our Behaviour” and, “How the Way We Sound Shapes our Identities.” Listen on their website linked above! 

Where should we Begin Esther Perel Podcast Haven PickWhere Should We Begin? with Esther Perel

Here’s an interesting pick that’s a little different from the others on this list. Where Should We Begin? is hosted by Esther Perel, a renowned couple’s therapist and features sessions with real couples facing real-life issues. The interviews are anonymous, but they tackle a wide range of relatable situations and challenges within relationships, with Ester helping each couple through them. Communication and Connection; chances are if you’ve been to the Haven, you’ve heard those words more than a few times. Alan Alda’s podcast is all about communicating and connecting with others on different levels in multiple areas of everyday life. Alan boasts a New York best-selling book on the art and science of relating and communicating, so it’s no wonder that his informative podcast is especially popular among our faculty. Oprah’s SuperSoul Conversations - Haven Podcast PicksOprah’s SuperSoul Conversations 

That’s right; the iconic Oprah has her own podcast series focusing on health, wellness and making meaning of the world around us. It features many different high-profile guests who are best-selling authors, spiritual luminaries and top medical professionals. It’s no surprise that this podcast is not only popular among Haven participants, but all over the world. You can listen to it on PodBean or Apple Podcasts; and good news, there are already 238 episodes uploaded for your listening pleasure. 

Ultimate Health Podcast - Haven PickThe Ultimate Health Podcast  

The Ultimate Health Podcast, hosted by married couple Marni Wasserman and Dr. Jesse Chappus, not only focuses on mindfulness and spirituality like some of our other podcast suggestions, it also covers topics such as lifestyle, nutrition, and fitness. Their website has a ton of free resources to check out as well as helpful descriptions for each of their episodes to help you choose where to begin. This podcast already has over 300 episodes for you to listen to, all of which are free and found on their website. 

Happier Podcast Gretchen Rubin - Haven PickHappier with Gretchen Rubin 

So far, we’ve covered our bases on connection, communication, health, and more connection. Here’s an interesting podcast focused on happiness! In addition to being a best-selling author, Gretchen Rubin, the host of Happier, is also “Oprah Approved”. The podcast is co-hosted by Gretchen’s younger sister and they discuss habits that lead to happiness. With some of your favourite mood-boosters inaccessible, you might gain something from tuning into over 300 episodes worth of ideas.
