Special 30-for-30 Youth Leadership giving opportunity

Yes, it's been 30 years!

Denise Goldbeck led the first Dance and Games For Children in 1987 - twelve children staged the musical Cats. Through that production, they learned much about themselves and each other, and received heart-felt applause.

That first program was a hit, and children returned year after year. The program grew and the children grew with it. It’s known today as the popular Kids in The Spotlight (KITS) program at The Haven.

Many children returned year after year, through their teens, taking on more and more responsibility. Denise skillfully developed leadership roles for the older participants, teaching them to model communication and coping skills for the younger children, and helping to produce the shows. The older youth became integral to the success of KITS, and the Youth Leadership program was formalized.

Since 2008, the Youth Leadership Fund has assisted teens who invest their summer working with the younger children while learning about their own development and gaining valuable leadership skills. Now, thirty years later, we have 68 future leaders enrolled in the 2017 Youth Intern Training program! It continues to be wildly popular and a roaring success!

The Youth Leadership Program was originally funded by Denise Goldbeck and Andrew Bing. Over the years others have made substantial contributions – Laurie Kelley and Scott Poole fund an annual Mackenzie Dickson Annika Raithby Youth Leadership Scholarship – and a monthly and annual donor program was launched for the KITS 25th anniversary.

Help us surpass our new goal to engage 30 new donors at $30 per month – adding over $10,000 to the Youth Leadership Fund per year to help us grow tomorrow’s leaders. Prefer to donate annually? We welcome 30-for-30 annual donations of $360 or more.

Celebrate this incredible 30-year achievement.

Your donation will also help us to sponsor two participants from Kenya in 2018!

In 2011, twelve youth leaders from The Haven went to Kit Mikayi, Kenya, to lead KITS and a youth leadership program. Two youth, Meshack Oyandi and David Otieno, were so inspired by the program that they have continued to work with children and youth in their communities, applying principles they learned from KITS and The Haven.

Oyandi and Otieno now have 35 people involved in three different centres in Kenya – Kit Mikayi, Kisumu and Nairobi. Their programs help disadvantaged children gain useful skills such as bicycle repair and garden maintenance, and engage them through fun and educational outings, visits to homes for seniors, and dance contests. They accomplish all of this with no outside funding!

Their dream is to bring happiness, and teach these children values aligned with KITS and The Haven core programs.

Our dream is to bring Oyandi and Otieno to The Haven in 2018, to experience first-hand our youth-led KITS programs. We wish them to return home with new leadership skills that will empower them to continue their beautiful work with even greater impact.

The wheels are already turning. Oyandi and Otieno have passports and immunizations. But, they still need financial support for tuition (to cover the cost of a full scholarship), visas processing fees, airfare and other travel costs. Your donation will help us realize this dream, their dream, our dream.

Happy Buddha

Dear donors, thank you so much for your assistance for my Come Alive. It has been a month of integration since the program ended. I’m sensing many healthy changes in my mental state and anxiety levels, no doubt thanks to the many insights I came to during my time there. I'm looking forward to continuing my involvement in the Haven community.
