Why Time Matters
~ written by Louise Amiur
Program Leader, Living Alive: Self-Awareness
People often ask what actually changes after 25 days.
The answer is simple.
Time.
Groups begin cautiously. People arrive with habits, histories, and protective strategies already in place. Roles form quickly. Defences too.
The early days can feel a bit like high school — watching, gauging, wondering how much of yourself is welcome.
Then something softens.
When a few people risk honesty and are met with care, the entire group shifts. Clear communication structures make this possible. What once felt unsafe becomes workable.
Patterns that cause difficulty now were often lifesaving earlier — people-pleasing, withdrawal, freezing, self-criticism. Over time, these become opportunities to lean in and build new neural pathways.
Like walking the same field again and again, a clearer path forms.
When the Group Becomes the Teacher
One of the most powerful moments in group learning is realizing we don’t need to wait for authority to intervene.
I remember a time when conflict arose outside facilitated sessions. The group expected leadership to step in.
Instead, something deeper happened.
People noticed their own choices — some spoke when they’d usually stay silent; others saw how easily they disengaged. The group claimed responsibility for the relational field they shared.
That moment showed what becomes possible when agency is held collectively.
Becoming More Fully Ourselves
Over time, people soften into their bodies.
Movement frees.
Voices clarify.
Presence steadies.
I’ve witnessed shame turn into celebration, fear into expression, and people step fully into themselves — met with respect and care.
Within clear boundaries around harm, there is extraordinary freedom.
Freedom to be yourself.
Freedom to learn alongside others.
The land itself — ocean, forest, and long history of connection — seems to support what unfolds. Many feel it the moment they arrive.into beginnings, to redefine themselves after loss or stagnation, and to step boldly into what’s next.
What Becomes Possible
Twenty-five days of intentional communication, curiosity, and responsibility changes how people relate.
People leave with:
- greater capacity to stay present
- more honesty without blame
- deeper connection without losing themselves
- a lived sense of belonging
This is what time makes possible.
A Gentle Invitation
If something here speaks to you —
if time, presence, and community feel like what you need —
there is a doorway waiting.
