ONLINE: Giving Voice

The gifts of vocal sounding

Since time immemorial, we have used our voices as vehicles for expression, communication, connection, healing and transcendence—be it cooing, babbling, speaking, singing, howling, toning, you name it. We wail in grief, squeal with joy, sigh in relief; we chant in devotion, and hum for comfort. We are born sound makers, and the voice is our sounding medium.

In our culture, we’ve become so addicted to talking that we seem to have forgotten that the voice is much more than a “word delivery tool.” We’ve also professionalized singing, giving rise to the notion of “singers,” and conversely, those who “can’t sing.” And yet having a voice is much more than one’s (perceived) ability to sing!

Imagine your voice this way: You are a vibrational being, living in a vibratory Universe, born with an innate vibrational medium—your voice! When used consciously, it can move energy, boost your immune system, lower your blood pressure, release endorphins, and much more. And it is literally right there under your nose.

Giving Voice Online combines a variety of group vocal sounding meditations, games and exercises, with individual off-line vocal sounding explorations and reflections. Together we will delve into the wonders of what it means to have a voice—as a vehicle for self-expression; as a vibrational healing medium; as a timeless, universal avenue of belonging; and as a meditative portal to deeper presence and awareness.

Giving Voice offers opportunities to:

  • Play with and learn about your voice.
  • Explore your voice as a vehicle for healing and transformation.
  • Express your voice more fully (i.e. let it out)
  • Explore your voice as a portal to deeper self awareness and self acceptance.
  • Share your vocal story, and connect with others in new and profound ways.
  • Continue your learning with take-home resources.

There are many other benefits of making sound, like reduced stress and enhanced health and wellness. You can learn more about the healing effects here.

“I participated in Leah Hokanson’s [Intro to] Giving Voice through Zoom. Expressing self created sound in my own living room was very comfortable. In fact, I felt safe to really open up to the sound. This program really translated well to the medium of Zoom. Thank you Leah for good vibrations.” – Jennie, past participant.
