Empathy and Freedom, Body and Mind: 5-Day Immersion in NVC

A deep immersion into compassionate and powerful principles and practice

This program is designed to support the ongoing development and integration of Compassionate or Nonviolent Communication (NVC) into every aspect of life.

Nonviolent Communication (NVC) is a powerful set of communication tools - and much more. It is a response to a fundamental question: how do we break free from our beliefs, behaviours, and systems that disconnect us from our embodied experience, and from each other as humans?

Angela Walkley and Mitch Miyagawa bring a unique take on NVC in this 5-day immersion. Through a dynamic dance of activity and stillness, movement and thought, they will take you deeper than the listening/speaking elements of NVC, through your “body” - to your inner signals and “felt-sense” - and through your “mind” - to a critical exploration of concepts of “needs”, power, and freedom.

NVC is a world-renowned approach to relationships and conflict that has been helping people live more meaningful lives within their families and their communities for 30 years. It’s been used by couples, parents, schools, organizations, and conflict zones in the Middle East and Asia.

Angela and Mitch’s approach is practical and applied, supported by a framework of principles and theory. It is also personal and partnership-oriented. Many have said that part of the joy of this workshop is witnessing Angela and Mitch’s work as a couple, striving for conscious intimacy and collaboration.

Scenarios and situations from your life, and Interactions within the group, will be your learning opportunities for looking at habitual patterns, underlying beliefs and practicing with ‘re-dos’. You will also:

  • Learn embodied practices of self-compassion and empowerment, starting every day with body awareness work
  • Face and embrace your places of pain and judgment, through empathic scenarios, dialogues, and enactments
  • Enhance your own 'empathy power' as you learn to really listen to others, whether or not you agree with them - or even like them!
  • Step into radical self responsibility and into the choices available to you
  • Enlarge the “liberation spaces” in your everyday life, by questioning long-held assumptions of what we “need”, and what is “enough”.

Most participants experience breakthroughs around relationships and purpose, a deeper love and engagement with what’s important to them, and a rediscovery of their physical, sensory experience.

Program Prerequisite: We prefer you have introductory level training in NVC. We would also consider exceptions for those of you who have read and worked with Marshall Rosenberg's book, Nonviolent Communication, A Language of Life. Please contact Angela Walkley at info@farthestshore.org if you’d like to confirm that this workshop is a fit for you.

We greatly value the participation of people from diverse backgrounds, origins, beliefs, and life situations. We want to acknowledge the barriers that face many individuals when considering this retreat, whether it’s cost, culture, or distance. Please contact us if you would like to talk about these barriers and jointly work towards strategies for your attendance. info@farthestshore.org.
